Unemployment claims are at their lowest.

Last week 320,000 Americans filed for new unemployment insurance claims; the lowest count since late 2007, and 15,000 fewer than the previous week. There is no doubt that the trend of unemployment claims are going down overall, but there are still states that are seeing an increase, California had the greatest increase. Because of the drop in the claims, Joel Naroff, president and chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors, an economic consulting firm, believes the next jobs report could be an improvement over recent months.

Overall this is good news that the total unemployment claims went down, but with the claims raising in some states this isn't going to be a huge beneficial impact on the economy.

  1. I'm glad that the unemployment claims went down. Everyone wants to see the economy to heal faster and get back to the top. I don't think it would be that easy. For a huge economy to get back to where it was, it takes a long time as we can see for the past few years. It's still a good thing to see the claims are going down overall, now we don't have to worry as much but things are still in a big mess.

  2. I thought the same thing, but actually the only reason why the unemployment rate is going down is because people have stopped looking for work, so really there hasn't been any new job openings. People aren't considered unemployed unless they're looking for work.

  3. Unemployment is going down which is positive for sure, even if it is small scale. Some is better than none. If it is the lowest in 6 years that is a positive. Even though some states claims are going up on the bright side the overall trend is positive.

  4. Just because the number of claims went down does not mean that the unemployment rate itself went down. There is a large probability that many of the people stopped looking for jobs all together. Although the statistics show that the numbers decreased, the numbers were only collected from a previous week. Two weeks of statistics can mean very little in terms of the entirety of a year.
